Welly 1:18 Lamborghini Diablo SV

Welly 1:18 Lamborghini Diablo SV
Finally, after almost 2 months of buying this awesome diecast (also my 1st Welly), I got the time and motivation to click some snaps of it using my friend's cellphone. In fact, it took some time to clean the Lambo, given that it was out of the box for a long time (although it was still in the cupboard).

To start off, at 1500 bucks, this is a steal, pure and simple. Maisto wouldn't be able to do this good a job with a Diablo at the same price. So if you do come across this one, get it because anyway a Diablo SV is a rare find.

The bodywork and proportion look right although I must say it's not perfect. There are very few diecast makers I believe (like Autoart) who can get the stance of a Diablo exactly right. I think it's one of the most difficult cars to replicate but still giving some leeway to Welly, I think they have done a decent job of it. The one bad thing I really dislike are the front wheels. For some reason, there is more vertical gap between the front wheels and their wheel arches than in the rear ones, making the front part of the body a bit higher in suspension than the rear part and setting off the stance a bit. In fact, the car doesn't even sit level on the tabletop. (Forgive me if this sounds too pessimistic but Lamborghinis are my favourite automakers, even more so than Ferrari).

They have not replicated the intake meshes on the sides of the body very well, there is really no indication it's a mesh, it's just a solid part which has just been painted black. I think this is where Maisto would definitely have done a better job.

However, there is one thing which I really liked in the diecast is that they have provided window panes in the door windows unlike Maisto Lamborghini Murcielago which just has open window frames in the doors. This is something which no other economic diecast maker does in their diecasts. In fact, I think even Welly has done this only in this particular model.

On the paintwork side, I think it's flawless. The sheen is nice and even and the paintwork exudes a good metallic finish. Now, if they had painted this in yellow with the 'SV' written in black, that would have been a real clincher!!

Interiors - I would say a tad better than Maisto but then nothing to brag about either. Although the white interiors contrast nicely with the dark blue colour of the exterior and the black seat belts are nicely visible against the white backdrop of the seats. The only problem is the ugly light blue coloured dashboard plainly visible through the windscreen. I think they could have gone for a much more suitable colour.

Overall rating - 7.5/10 - A nice piece to have and definitely one to have if you are a Lambo fan and looking to complete your Lambo lineup. Apart from some minor glitches, it's a worthy piece no doubt.

Wow! So finally we get to see the elusive Diablo. Congrats Karan. Thats really a very fine model. Regarding the front ride height, if the Welly uses springs in the front suspension, you might have to disassemble the model and cut one or two coils off the springs to get it to the right ride height.

I hope I am not hijacking your thread Karan but I just want to show how good the Welly really is even when compared to an Autoart. I got the model from a friend in Bangalore who was selling his collection and going big time into RC planes or else no chance of getting this one. The ones on ebay go for really silly prices, north of 80-90 US$.

Woho Winston, you did a good thing by posting the pics of the Autoart version but yes I must agree there is hardly any difference between this and Welly version. If I had both these options available in a shop, I would definitely go for the Welly one. Except for a bit more refined interiors (which though look bland even in the Autoart version, although can't blame them for it, I think Lambo sucked real big when it came to interiors in their earlier models like this Diablo and the Countach) and the really correct stance and ride height in the Autoart version, everything else looks exactly the same.

Oh, by the way, I tried to find whether my Welly version has any coiled springs to somehow correct the front ride height, but couldn't figure it out. I guess I'll have to open the whole undercarriage to correct it, is that right? I would really love to correct this, the current adjustment takes away the nasty stance of the Diablo.

No point in paying 3 times the price when you get a model that is 90% there. Except for some carpeting which I don't care about and some minor details, the Welly gives the Autoart a good run for the money. You may have to cut off one or two coils off the spring to get the right height. A little trial should set your Diablo right.

Vaas welcome back man, I was just wondering that you haven't replied to this thread whereas you are one of the first people to post on any thread. I kind of missed the huge amount of posts per day that you achieve here. Made me refresh SMC page a whole lot of times in a day. Hope your trip was a success and also hope that you get some 1:18 Welly's in the near future Big Grin
