Back in the day, she was an intimidating missile indeed and annihilated the competition. After the rule changes, the 917K was another reason that Ford dropped their LeMans efforts, even after being dominant throughout the mid 60s.
They were just unable to compete against these lighter and more powerful Porsches'.

^^ Add Ferrari to that list too, who concentrated on F1 instead of LeMans largely thanks to beatings by Ford GT40s and later Porsche 917Ks
