Buying from international ebay
Ok guys this topic has been raised countless times in the past but I couldn't find the older threads so posting another one again. Sorry for this. Here are my queries:

1. Do I have to pay anything above the model price + shipping price like custom duty?

2. When I pay using paypal, would there be any charge levied on using my credit card for international purchase?

3. When I make the payment, how is the doller-rupee conversion taken care of? Is that day's avg rate taken for converting the price of the model into rupees?

4. MOST IMP - How much time does it normally take for a model to arrive given it's shipped from the US or the UK?

My favorite post on SMC "I wait for the day when you go ballistic while buying models after you get your first job. I think I would be seeing KV & the Modelart guys bursting fire crackers all day." (quote Winston)

Seller dont worry about customs : you as buyer have to pay after the model is reviewed by customs and not sure so much they gonna charge so no idea in starting so seller never charge it .
2. When I pay using paypal, would there be any charge levied on using my credit card for international purchase?
NO charger at all...everything is paid by seller

3. When I make the payment, how is the doller-rupee conversion taken care of? Is that day's avg rate taken for converting the price of the model into rupees?

If you use paypal ,they would tell you both prices in US$ and INR as per that day rate.same for credit card as you can see the dollar conversion on bill later.

4. MOST IMP - How much time does it normally take for a model to arrive given it's shipped from the US or the UK?
Usually couple of weeks to month depending of customs time and holiday.

Hope i answered your question as per my experience.
I recommend to Paypal when you buy from eBay as they provide an insurance which help you in dispute and not receiving the product.

Help me many times.

RE: Buying from international ebay
Ravi has answered them all. I will just add something generic.

The conversion to INR depends largely on the credit card issuing bank and it is slightly higher than the rate that you see
in the newspapers or currency websites.

2. To it, they add cross border transaction fees which is around 2%. (Again depends on the card issuer)

3. For 2, add Service Tax and Higher Education Cess.

While HDFC bank clearly provides the data of 2 and 3, Citibank does not. (I use these 2 only)

So in the end you end up paying Rs 2 - 3 MORE per unit (Dollar/Euro) than the prevalent conversion rate that you see in Newspapers
and other websites.

Nothing to be disapointed of though considering the comfort and flexibility of online orders.

If the package is marked as a Gift, customs will not even bother looking at it. One or 2 models for personal
use should not attract customs duty but again this is a grey area which the customs take advantage of.

All the best for your first consignment. Trust me you will never feel so much excitement after the first 1 or 2 arrivals
from abroad, specially when you are ordering them yourself. Enjoy every bit of it.

Good luck!

RE: Buying from international ebay
Thanks a lot Ravi and Ari for all that info. That's a lot of light on some shady matters. Also guys do you have any idea how much time it takes to receive a model if I buy from GEB. Especially Winston, can you tell me about this since I think you use GEB more than normal ebay.

RE: Buying from international ebay
Karan, things are more expensive on GEB than normal Ebay. Not only do you have to factor in international shipping but also a hefty commission from the middlemen who go by the name of i2cworld.com. While they have a poor track record with many customers, myself not recieving some delicious diecast but having recieved the refund, I must say they are improving. My last 2-3 models came to me in less than 10 days after making payment.
If you plan to shop on GEB, search for a specific brand and narrow it down to the scale of your choice. You also need to filter your searches to get down to the best deals. Just putting Mercedes will give you everything with that name. Narrow down to the specifics and you shoudl get a good deal. Don't forget to use your discount coupons as well. Also don't wait for a big discount coupon if you need something badly. Big Grin

If you can't dazzle them with brillance, baffle them with bullshit.

RE: Buying from international ebay
Hmm...thanks for that update Winston. 10 days is actually pretty good. I'm willing to pay a bit extra for shorter lead times. I don't have the patience to wait a month or more. Searching is ok, I normally search with the exact keywords for a specific model I'm looking for. Right now, I'm eying the Yatming '57 Ford Tbird which is about 4K, here's the link - http://orders.ebay.in/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?I...0622643339

Buddy, dont you think 4K for a Yat Ming is too much? I mean I have few Yatmings and they costed me around 1500 to 2000. Its around twice or thrice the price buddy. Its like getting a Maisto, that is available in Indian market, from abroad by paying 3 times the MRP over here.
